To expand a Dominican company into Spain, you validate demand with Spanish buyers, pick an entry region and segment, choose the entry model (distributor, agent, importer, partner, direct sales or subsidiary), adapt pricing and offer to how Spain buys, and activate in waves against a measured baseline. Legal, tax and customs work goes to specialists.
What does it really take to sell in Spain?
A Dominican company reaches Spain with a real advantage and a dangerous assumption. The advantage: the language, part of the business culture and, sometimes, a diaspora that already knows the brand. The assumption: that what works in Santo Domingo or Santiago will work the same way in Madrid.
It doesn't. Spain behaves like several regional markets, with more concentrated distribution, more procedural buyers and European competitors who already own the shelf. The entry question is not how to get known. It is which Spanish buyer you serve better than their current supplier, and through whom you reach them.
Alocallao is a strategic marketing and commercial planning consultancy that leads market entry for companies in Spain, the Dominican Republic and the United States. In this corridor we design the Dominican company's commercial entry strategy and lead whoever executes it.
Which Dominican companies make the move, and where do they stumble?
Each profile arrives with a different asset and breaks in a different place.
| Profile | What it brings to Spain | Where it usually stumbles |
|---|---|---|
| Family group | Capital, reputation in the DR and a business line ready to go abroad | Entry is decided at the family table, with no written thesis and nobody to say no |
| Consumer brand | Dominican identity and demand in the diaspora | It stays in the nostalgia store and never reaches the regional chain |
| Services (BPO, engineering, health) | Competitive cost and bilingual talent | It sells price to a midsize company that buys trust and continuity |
| Technology | A product proven in the DR and the Caribbean | It expects a short sales cycle and never maps IT, procurement and finance |
| Tourism | Relationships with Spanish tour operators | It goes from tour operator supplier to competitor on their turf |
| Free trade zone | Industrial capacity and export know-how | It sells through an intermediary, with no brand and no link to the end buyer |
The common pattern is treating Spain as an extension of the home market. The diaspora works as a test bed, but it rarely carries a profitable entry on its own.
How selling works in the DR vs how selling works in Spain
These are starting guidelines, not laws: every sector and region adjusts them.
| Dimension | In the Dominican Republic | In Spain |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides | The owner or the family, with direct access to whoever signs | General management, sales and procurement, with several filters before the signature |
| How the door opens | Relationship and referral | Relationship, preceded by a written proposal, references and a spec sheet |
| Consumer channel | Traditional trade (colmados, the neighborhood corner stores, and wholesalers) alongside supermarkets | Large retail and regional chains, with buying groups that gatekeep the shelf |
| Client structure | Centralized in Santo Domingo or the Cibao | By regional branch: what closes at headquarters gets executed, or not, in the field |
| Pace | Fast if the owner wants it | Procedural: supplier approval, committee, annual budget |
| Proof | Who vouches for you | Comparable cases and written terms |
| Price | Direct negotiation, at the end | Price list, volume rebates and payment terms negotiated with procurement |
The hardest difference to absorb is proof: in Spain trust is still built, but it is documented. We cover it in the guide on how Spanish companies buy and turn it into a decision-maker map for each target account.
What does the Spanish market look like?
Small businesses, midsize companies and regional branches
Spain had 3,310,824 active companies on January 1, 2025; 54.4% had no employees and 27.2% had one or two, according to the Central Business Directory of Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE). In B2B that forces a choice: micro-businesses are reached through channels, not account by account; midsize companies have a sales director, procurement and often regional branches, and there the sale is consultative.
Buying groups and large retail
In consumer goods, the shelf runs largely through large retail and buying groups that negotiate assortment and terms for several chains. You need a distributor or importer with that relationship, or a very clear reason to open a new listing. We detail it in distribution channels in Spain.
Regional diversity
Per the same directory, Catalonia holds 18.4% of active companies, Andalusia 16.3% and the Madrid region 15.9%. Each has its own distributors, habits and, sometimes, language. Entering all of Spain at once is a budget mistake: the winnability matrix decides where to start.
Which entry model fits?
The right one lets you learn fastest with the least fixed commitment.
| Model | When it fits | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Direct sales from the DR | Services and tech with a few large accounts | Closeness; it demands a very disciplined remote sales process |
| Sales agent | Validating demand in one region at variable cost | Control of the message and the account base |
| Distributor or importer | Consumer or industrial goods needing stock, logistics and shelf access | Margin and the end-customer relationship |
| Local partner | The partner brings accounts and reputation in your sector | Part of the control |
| Branch or subsidiary | Proven demand and volume that justifies structure | Fixed cost and a long commitment |
ICEX-Invest in Spain describes the legal forms of establishment; that decision belongs to your corporate lawyer and tax advisor. Ours is commercial: which model, which partner, which targets, and on what signal you move to the next one. Step by step in the guide to entering the Spanish market.
Is Spain the gateway to the European Union?
It can be. The Dominican Republic is a party to the CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, signed in October 2008. According to Access2Markets, the European Commission's portal, the EU grants duty-free, quota-free access to goods from the CARIFORUM States, and the agreement also covers services and investment. Whether your product meets the rules of origin is for your trade compliance specialist to confirm.
The agreement opens customs, not demand. Nobody in Europe buys from you because you pay no tariff.
Spain fits as a first European market because of language and affinity, but every country needs its own local layer. We build a playbook in Spain with a reusable method layer and decide the second wave with data from the first, as in a multi-market launch strategy.
How we run the entry into Spain
Three phases, three contracts, no skipping.
- Diagnosis and Strategy. We validate demand, choose region and segment and set the bet in a one-page thesis.
- Playbook. Entry model and partner profile, offer ladder and pricing, local layer and a wave-based activation sequence.
- Strategic Direction. We lead the distributor, agent or agency that executes, with a period committee and results against a signed baseline.
We work remotely, on an agreed cadence. Company formation, NIE tax IDs, visas, tax, hiring, banking, customs, health registration, trademarks and contracts go to specialists in Spain. We don't produce campaigns or websites either: the marketing is produced by whoever produces it today. The client decides. We direct. Third parties execute. More corridors under international expansion.
